About this service
Kitchen Renovation in the Capital Region.
A kitchen renovation is different from a full kitchen remodel. Where a remodel rebuilds the room from the studs out, a renovation updates what's already there — new counters, refinished cabinets, new hardware, fresh paint, updated lighting, maybe a new backsplash or appliance. If the footprint and basic structure of your kitchen work and you just want it to look and feel fresh, renovation is the right scope.
Pricing and what's realistic
Typical kitchen renovations at HomeNest run $10,000 to $30,000. That range depends heavily on how far you push materials. Painting existing cabinets, installing quartz or solid-surface counters, and swapping out hardware is the anchor of most projects. Layer in appliance updates, a tile backsplash, and new lighting and the scope moves toward the top of the range — still well below a full remodel.
When this is the right choice
Most homeowners who choose a renovation over a remodel are in one of two situations: the kitchen was built well but styled dated, or the budget doesn't support a full rebuild yet. Renovation is also a strong choice if you're prepping a home for sale in the next 12-18 months — a clean, current kitchen is one of the highest-impact things a seller can do, and the math doesn't always support spending $60K+ on a remodel you won't live with long.
The cabinet decision
The cabinet decision makes or breaks a renovation. If your boxes are solid wood and structurally sound, refinishing or painting existing cabinets is one of the most transformative things you can do for the investment — a $6,000-$8,000 scope that updates 80% of the visual impact of the room. If your boxes are particleboard from the 80s and starting to swell, renovation may not pencil out and you're likely better off in our kitchen remodeling scope where we replace the cabinets entirely.
Counters, backsplash, and finish details
Counters and backsplash usually come next. Quartz is the Capital Region workhorse for its look and durability; granite still has a loyal audience and has come down in price. Subway, handmade-look, and zellige-style tiles dominate backsplashes. Fixture choices — faucets, cabinet pulls, pendants over the island — are small on their own but add up to a cohesive look when chosen together. We walk every selection with you so the choices compound instead of fighting each other.
Timeline and disruption
Renovations are faster and less invasive than remodels — typical on-site time is 3-5 weeks, and most clients keep their kitchen partly functional throughout. Cabinet refinishing is the longest linear piece because finishes need cure time; counter fabrication runs 10-14 days from template. We stage the work so you're never without a working sink and fridge for more than a day or two.
How this fits with other work
If the kitchen is part of a larger update, look at home renovation for the room-by-room version of this same approach, or bathroom renovation for the same scope applied to bathrooms. Many of our clients who start with a kitchen renovation end up bundling a second room in the same push to save mobilization costs.

Common Questions
Kitchen Renovation FAQs.
Answers to the questions Capital Region homeowners ask most before starting a kitchen renovation.
- A renovation updates surfaces and components within the existing kitchen structure — new counters, refinished cabinets, new fixtures, new tile. A remodel rebuilds the room from the studs out, typically with a new layout, new cabinet boxes, and new mechanicals. Renovation runs $10K-$30K and 3-5 weeks; remodeling runs $30K-$80K+ and 8-12 weeks on-site. If your layout works and the bones are sound, renovation is usually the better buy.
