"How long will this take?" is one of the first three questions every bathroom remodel client asks us. The honest answer: it depends on scope, but for most Capital Region bathrooms, plan on 4-6 weeks on-site once work begins. Getting to "work begins" takes another 3-5 weeks of design, selections, and material procurement. So call it 7-11 weeks from signed contract to finished bathroom.
Here's what drives the timeline, how it breaks out week by week, and what you can do to live through the work without losing your mind.
Bathroom remodel timeline by scope
Capital Region bathroom timelines break out into three tiers:
- Renovation scope (2-3 weeks on-site):Vanity swap, new floor tile, new fixtures, new lighting, fresh paint. Keep existing shower, plumbing, and layout. Fast, low-disruption — see our bathroom renovation page for the full scope.
- Standard full remodel (4-6 weeks on-site): Demo to studs, new waterproofing, new shower or tub-to-shower conversion, new tile throughout, new vanity and fixtures, often layout tweaks. The most common HomeNest bathroom scope. See bathroom remodeling.
- Luxury remodel (8-12 weeks on-site): Layout changes, freestanding tub plus separate walk-in shower, custom tile, heated floors, built-in storage, specialty plumbing fixtures. More trades on-site, more cure times, more inspections.
Add 3-5 weeks of design and material procurement on the front end for any scope. Custom vanities and premium tile have the longest lead times, so we finalize those selections first.
Week-by-week breakdown of a standard remodel
Here's what a typical 5-week on-site bathroom remodel looks like at HomeNest:
Week 1: Demo and rough-in prep
We strip the existing bathroom to studs and subfloor — tile, drywall, fixtures, vanity, shower or tub all come out. Any discovered conditions (water damage, failed plumbing, rotted subfloor) get documented and repaired. Floor framing and subfloor get inspected. Plumbing and electrical rough-in locations are marked and prepped.
Week 2: Plumbing, electrical, waterproofing
New plumbing rough-in goes in (all water supply, drains, shower valves, tub drain if applicable). New electrical circuits run for lighting, outlets, ventilation, and radiant floor heat if in scope. Shower waterproofing (Schluter membrane or equivalent) is installed and inspected. Insulation goes in at exterior walls. Plumbing and electrical get inspected by the municipality.
Week 3: Drywall, floor tile, shower tile
Drywall and cement board go up. Floor tile gets installed with proper underlayment and thinset; it cures overnight. Shower tile follows — shower walls first, then ceiling if it's tiled. Grouting happens a day or two after tile set so the thinset cures. This week has the most linear steps and drives schedule more than any other.
Week 4: Vanity, fixtures, finish plumbing
Vanity gets delivered and installed. Counter templating happens after the vanity is set; fabrication takes 10-14 days, so for vanities we template early. Plumbing fixtures go in — faucets, showerhead, drain, toilet. Electrical fixtures go in — vanity lighting, overhead can lights, exhaust fan. Shower glass gets templated (fab time ~10 days).
Week 5: Paint, trim, punch list, glass install
Walls, ceiling, and trim get painted. Baseboards and shoe molding install. Door casing gets reset. Shower glass arrives and gets installed. Final cleaning. Client walks with Jeff for the punch list, and any items get knocked out same day or early the following week. Then handover — and the 5-Year Workmanship Warranty begins.
What causes bathroom remodel delays
The top causes of delay in Capital Region bathroom projects, roughly in order of frequency:
- Material lead times. Custom vanities (6-8 weeks), premium tile (4-8 weeks), specialty fixtures (2-6 weeks). We order early but sometimes things slip.
- Hidden conditions. Water damage behind tile, failed cast iron waste lines, knob-and-tube electrical that needs updating. More common in older Albany, Troy, and Cohoes housing stock.
- Permit delays. Most Capital Region municipalities issue bathroom remodel permits in 2-3 weeks. Historic district review (e.g., Stockade in Schenectady) can add time. Larger projects in Saratoga Springs occasionally see permit office backlogs.
- Client selection changes. Once work is started, changing the tile selection or fixture package adds 2-4 weeks because new materials have to be ordered and possibly old ones returned. We lock selections before demo to avoid this.
- Inspection scheduling. Plumbing and electrical rough-in inspections happen on municipal schedules. In high-season (spring/summer), this can add 2-3 days per inspection.
How to prepare for your bathroom remodel
Two weeks before demo:
- Clear all personal items from the bathroom and adjacent hallway.
- Identify which bathroom (or bathrooms) you'll use during work. If this is your only bathroom, plan a 2-3 day stay with family or friends during the invasive plumbing week.
- Move any fragile art or decor from walls adjacent to the bathroom.
- Plan pet management — most bathroom projects generate noise and dust.
The week of demo:
- HomeNest will protect adjacent rooms with plastic and dust barriers and put down floor protection in hallways.
- We'll stage a dumpster for demo debris. Depending on your property, this may require a temporary street permit.
- Water will be shut off briefly for plumbing work — we give you 24 hours notice.
Living without the bathroom
If you have a second full bathroom, you'll barely notice the work. If you have a half-bath, plan to shower at a gym or relative's house for 2-3 weeks. If this is your only bathroom, we stage the work so you have a functional toilet at night and on weekends for most of the project — we only take it fully offline for 2-3 days during the plumbing rough-in week.
Daily cleanup and dust control are part of our standard process. You won't be living in a construction zone at night; the work stays contained to the bathroom.
