Guilderland stretches from the dense Westmere corridor along Route 20 out to the rural village of Altamont and the hills beyond. The housing varies accordingly, post-war colonials close to the Albany line, mid-century ranches in the central subdivisions, and older farmhouses and village homes in Altamont. Remodeling here is often about bringing a solid 1960s-1980s home up to current expectations without over-investing.

The Guilderland housing stock

Westmere and McKownville sit close to Albany and trend to 1950s-1970s colonials and ranches on modest lots. Fort Hunter’s established subdivisions have colonials from the 60s through 80s. Altamont, the village on the northwest edge of town, keeps some older character, Victorian and early-20th-century homes on village streets. Newer subdivisions toward the hills feature 90s-2000s colonials and splits on larger lots. The common thread: solid homes that are aging out of their original finishes.
